Alvin was born on March 23, 1959, in Crystal Springs, MS. He grew up in Terry, MS, surrounded by love and a deep sense of faith and community. He was a devoted son to the late Eli Powell Sr. (Irene) and Ruth G. Mack Powell Cooper. He was a proud and loving father to his children, Mario, Antauris, Alvin, Jr. and his nephew, Chris and a beloved brother to his siblings, Janice, Melvin, Sylvia, and Eli Jr. He was also a very loving brother to his step siblings, Tony, Jackie, Janice and Earlene. Alvin was a kind and generous soul and a faithful friend to many who knew him.
Under the guidance and leadership of his parents, Alvin joined and was baptized at Collis Hill Church of Christ Holiness U.S.A. at a young age.
He was educated in the Hinds County Public Scholl System. After receiving his high school diploma from Terry High School in 1977, he earned a baseball scholarship and enrolled at Tougaloo College.
From a young age, Alvin enjoyed a love and passion for baseball, basketball, football, cards and fishing, inspiring those around him with gifts and talents. He was dedicated to serving others whether through his 41-year career at Engelhard, working alongside his father and brother as a plumber, his involvement with the Union where he served as president for many years or his associations with the Terry Old School Cruisers.
Alvin was deeply committed to his faith and his community and was known for his bold and courageous spirit. His unwavering kindness touched the lives of everyone he met. His energy and passion for life will never be forgotten. His legacy of love, compassion and truth will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Alvin was predeceased by his father, Eli Sr. and his brother, Eli Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Mario (Sherry)Martin of Georgia, Antauris Holly of Terry, MS., Alvin Powell Jr. of Atlanta, GA and Christopher(Shakena) Kendrick of Jackson, MS; his mother, Ruth Cooper of Terry, MS; his stepmother, Irene Ransom Powell of Crystal, MS; his siblings, Janice, Melvin(Linda) and Sylvia Powell, all of Terry, MS; stepbrother, Tony Cooper of Jackson, MS; stepsisters, Jackie Carter of Peoria, IL., Janice Bailey of Cartersville, GA and Earlene Stewart of Jackson, MS. He also leaves his grandchildren , Christian, Mario, Jr., Kamaya and Kristie; special friend, Tremekia Jones of Jackson, MS and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
