Dorothy Jean Pope Whitaker

Dorothy transitioned to her heavenly home on December 6, 2025. Dorothy was the second child of Melvin Section Pope and Gladys Wolfe Pope. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Dora Palmer and brother Curtis Pope.

Dorothy completed her education in the Hinds County Mississippi Public School System, culminating with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Jackson State University.

At an early age, Dorothy accepted Christ and joined Salem Baptist Church in Terry, MS. She was a musician who served faithfully at multiple churches in Mississippi and Alaska.

During her career, Dorothy was employed by schools in Mississippi, Oklahoma and Fairbanks, Alaska, where she retired with 38 years of service.

Dorothy is survived by her brothers, Melvin Pope, Jr. and Jimmie Pope, along with nieces, nephews extended family and friends. She would like to  acknowledge her special friend Joe Haynes and her niece Anita Y. Pope who provided compassionate care.
