Erma Powell

June 8, 1935 — May 4, 2024

Crystal Springs MS

Erma Johnson Powell aged 88 departed this life on the serene morning of Saturday, May 4, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family. Born on June 8, 1935, in Crystal Spring, MS, she was the daughter of the late Herman Johnson and Doll Ford Johnson. Erma was one of ten children in her cherished family. She is survived by her siblings: Deloris Pack (Lynch, KY), Fannie McCormick (Durant,Ms), Inez Wiggins {Phil} (Baltimore, MD), Johnetta Arts {Earl} (Houston, TX), and Bobby Ford McFarlane {AL} (Minneapolis, MN).
From a young age, Erma was a devoted member of Mt. Calvary CME Church, participation actively until her health challenges arose. She instilled the values of faith and community in her children and grandchildren by ensuring they share in her church life. Her love for singing in the choir was profound. Erma was a cornerstone of her community, known for her loving sacrifices, her ever-present smile, and her renowned southern home cooking which drew many to her table after church services.
Erma, affectionately known as Grandma Erma by local children, was a familiar and beloved figure on her frequent visits to Walmart, where she never missed an opportunity to chat, laugh, and share stories with friends and strangers alike. Her humor and wisdom were infectious, brightening the lives of those around her. Erma's working years were spent in garment factories in Crystal Springs and Hazelhurst, MS, where she was loved for her jovial spirit.
Her passion for gardening was evident in the beautiful blooms of rose bushes she planted at the homes of her children and grandchildren. Erma's love for gardening and growing plants has been passed down through the generations.
Emma was united in marriage to the late Troy Powell, Sr. in 1952, a loving union that blessed them with six children. Mourning her loss yet celebrating her legacy are the children: Brenda A. Rankin (Minneapolis, MN), Mary Powell Johnson, Kenneth R. Powell, Sr. (Anita), and Jeffrey L. Powell (Theresa), all of Crystal Springs, Ms. Preceding her in death were her children, Louise Powell Hackett and Troy Powell Jr. She leaves behind a rich legacy of twenty-four grandchildren, forty-six great-grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. A very special cousin, Margaret Powell Guynes, who was like a sister to her and stayed by her side until her peaceful passing.
Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend was beacon of light, spreading love, joy, kindness, and compassion to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.
